10. The Tribunal
| This morning, as planned, Erik came to me accompanied by two citizen-soldiers. Together we went to court, where was to be played my future. We went there by foot and by metro. On the way, many travellers stared at me, because I wasn't very convincing in this blue diplomat uniform, it had to make me look as a criminal, but isn't that what I am ?
From the distance, I managed to see the tribunal, a large statue, personifying impartiality, was on the front of the building. The classic touch of this building gave me the impression that the Republicans wanted to appear as heirs of the Roman republic. We entered, then went thru a room where my identity was checked by machines as in the airstation. Then it seemed that I have been observed by somebody standing in a dark room. Then I was given a hood and normal clothing and went in the courtroom. The room was full, I could distinguish on some balconies students, on others simply curious people, and close to me other hooded people : the witnesses I supposed. Judge Yansen spoke : - Defendant 503, I inform you that the hoods are used to protect the identities of the protagonists of this case from the public and that in certain measures private confrontations can be asked for. I declare the case open. - Object of this case : To determine if Defendant 503 is authorized to acquire a pro-citizenship of the Universal Republic, knowing his old membership of the oppressing class of an enemy country. Then a person in the forefront rose and came to the platform, even hooded, I immediately recognized who it was, she spoke : - I am a pro-citizen, before I used to work with all my family as a serf, on the lands of the father of the Defendant. I would like to testify in the favour to the Defendant, so that the court may understand that his membership of the oppressing class was due to the hereditary system, and that he is not the torturer his father was. He saved my life by taking away his father's, and thus allowing the escape of 25 other serfs. A man rose and presented himself, he was not hooded, for he was Magistrate Fayer-Kox : - The investigation seems to reveal the veracity of the facts describes by Witness 247, however I think that it is necessary to evaluate the psychological state of the Defendant, to determine if he is an enemy spy in the first place, and if he is a ana-citizen of the killer type in the second place. Magistrate Tilo-Vekyo, charged with the counter-investigation (in fact Erik worked for him), spoke : - I inform the court that up to now the investigation and the counter-investigation came to the same conclusion : it is necessary to study the psychological state of Defendant, by confronting him with the events and then to determine which tests will have to be carried during his pro-citizenship period in just circumstances. Then the judge asked me, if I had understood everything and if I thought that one had made an error on the person, I thus explained that all seemed to me correct of their share knowing my origin and the events, but that however I wished a "private confrontation" with Witness 247... the court was then closed for the day. |
