3. The Box
| First of all he gave me a white sash, in order to make my diplomat status visible to all the other citizens. Secondly, he gave me a double dialled watch, giving the time in the metric and in the old systems, on the back of the watch was written "using this watch is a crime, apart from the situations described by the law (Art 9.5 of the 15th of Thermidor Year 2 of the U.R.)" What was interesting about this watch, apart from the numbers in deciday and milliday, was the fact that instead of having turning hands, it had turning dials |

| An other puzzling object was the calendar a week of 10 days (primidi, duodi, tridi, quartidi, quintidi, sextidi, septidi, octidi, nonidi, decadi) is called a decade (or decaday), 3 decadays formed a month. Months have strange names evoking nature (vendemiaire, brumaire, frimaire, nivose, pluviose, ventose, germinal, floreal, prairial, messidor, thermidor, fructidor). Even the dates were different, not even did the new year's eve fall on the unusual period of autumn equinox, that the number of the year itself was different ! Instead of being in the Year of Grace 1884 of Our Saviour J.C., we were in 92 of the U.R. I always asked myself, why is it they always try to convert everything to the metric system ?I must admit that the imperial system, derived from what they call the old system, is 12 based, and that our calendar has many irregularities because it's tradition based... but changing everything ! Oh well, I must show good will, I betrayed my country, I mustn't get myself in trouble with this one yet. |
