| This is a quick overview of the alternate history that led to the setting of the game U.R.: first of all the French Kingdom didn't loose the North American wars against the British, thanks to betrayal of 8 English colonies (the Yankees). This enabled France to keep its pocessions from Quebec to Louisiana (Acadia), Lafayette gained renown a bit later by defending the young North American Federation from an attack of the autonomous British province of Great Alabama. Therefore just before the French Revolution started, old British colonies were already Republics, and Lafayette was more than a Hero. The French Revolution started, and when the King fled from France, Lafayette was at the head of the executive… he declared the Republic in 1792 and declared martial law right away, because all monarchies of Europe wanted the destruction of the Republic. Thanks to realistic military campaigns (as opposed to Napoleonic campaigns) and a better choice of alliance formation, this enabled the continent to be secured. Finally by giving more freedom to the people "delivered", about the their choice of the government form, the Republic became the Universal Republic. And stretched all over Europe, from Portugal to Poland. At start it was an imperfect, confederation of states being all constitutional and parliamentary, but some were laic, some not, some still had a hereditary function, some not… |
